No kidding. I got the #3 and #7 guys on my list. I’m delighted to nab Utley, and to not miss out on the 1B merry-go-round.

I can’t really dispute any of the picks, though I am surprised Reyes and Sizemore went in the first two rounds.

It’s interesting to see the players who solidly make the first two rounds versus the players who make the first two rounds based on the sheets of just a few participants.

Example of players who weren’t on a lot of lists — Mark Reynolds and Jose Reyes.

Reynolds went very high, but a lot of you wouldn’t have drafted him at all in the first two rounds. I find that pretty interesting. Perhaps by next year, after people have gotten used to seeing Reynolds drafted so high, he’ll become a bigger staple (for better or worse) on the list of top 20 players into the 2010 season.

Could be that Jose Reyes goes the other way.

Doing it this way gives me the chance to see what sort of deviation we’re looking at on players being drafted.

Reyes and Sizemore were top 5 picks this year and both got hurt this season…I find it confusing that both would be so undervalued going into next year…both are extremely young and are plenty capable of bouncing back…personally, I was pretty shocked that I was able to get Reyes at 18…

And I agree, I do see about 4-5 guys in the 2nd round that I would definitely consider first round talent next season…I do think Reynolds at 5 was quite a reach, but I can’t really argue with any of the picks outside of that…was really hoping J. Upton fell to me at the end of the 2nd, I see nothing but good things coming from that kid going forward, dude’s a stud…

Not a horrible draft for me (BtB), but I messed up in my extra instructions and actually wished we would have drafted someone else. Oh well. Will live with it.

Reyes scares me right now in that he is not doing a good job at rehabbing and injury could linger.

Grady has also not been great since injury and couldn’t move him too high.

Reynolds could justify that high, but would like to have at least 2-3 good seasons for a #1 pick

I was hoping Miguel Cabrera would fall to 3nd round. Had him pretty high.

  5. danduke  •  Aug 11, 2009 @12:25 pm

I echo BtB’s concern for Reyes. A hamstring injury to someone whos value is mostly tied to SB is not something I take lately. Sizemore’s injury doesn’t bother me as much (though I do wish he would shut it down for 2009), but I didn’t have him in my top 20 because I suspected he might slip.

I had Reynolds on my list, but much lower than 5. I am extremely skeptical of his ability to hit higher than .260 going forward, and I see some reversion to past results in HR and SB. Basically I see Adam Dunn with 3B eligibility here. Valuable, but not top 10 material.

Agreed on Upton – could be a top three performer next year, easily.

Don’t see how Miguel Cabrera could fall to 21st pick or later…

Unruhlies checking in. A little confusion with me having A-Rod ranked higher than David Wright, but thanks to Eriq for fixing that up.

I had similar thoughts as danduke regarding Reyes. His fantasy value is so tied to his ability to run, and that he is still nowhere near full speed after almost three months of rehab seriously worries me. But then again, look at someone like Carl Crawford, whose pre-draft value fell this year based mainly on supressed SB in 2008 due to a wonky hamstring. For those who took a chance on Crawford in the mid-3rd round draft position he typically went in this year, the gamble has really paid off. It may be a similar story with Reyes in 2010. Personally, I was hoping he might fall to the 3rd round, but I’m not surprised he didn’t.

I’ve got to say, preparing these 3rd-4th round lists is a much more difficult task, and it only gets harder from here on out.

  7. serknuts  •  Aug 11, 2009 @1:18 pm

I do have the same concerns you guys bring up for Reyes and if something were to linger into the offseason and into next season his value would definitely plummet…but he is only 26 and is being shut down for the rest of the season, and like I said the guy was routinely being picked 3rd or 4th overall in drafts…and if we’re drafting ‘now’ for 2010, I feel his upside would warrant a 2nd round selection…

And i’m with chris, juggling these names for the next couple rounds has been quite daunting…

This is (by far) the earliest I have ever drafted, and I have to say I love it.

Anyone want to throw a few bucks down, extend this to a 20-24 round draft, and make it a real league next year?

Danduke- you got me really excited when you asked how Miguel Cabrera could drop to the 21st pick. Unfortunately, he was taken with the 13th. Buzzkill.

  9. Millsy  •  Aug 11, 2009 @2:10 pm

Definitely changed around the rankings last second and put Miguel Cabrera right above Reyes. Kind of wish I hadn’t done that. But can’t complain too much about getting a guy hitting .330 with 35 HR in the second round.

  10. Millsy  •  Aug 11, 2009 @2:12 pm

Then again…sounds like I got pretty solid value for Cabrera from everyone being surprised he went low…can’t wait for tomorrow.

  11. chris3251206  •  Aug 11, 2009 @2:37 pm

TheSportsBanter: I’m also loving the early draft. Take away the crutch of all the pre-season fantasy guides and drafting a fantasy team becomes a much tougher exercise of your evaluative skills.

And I for one would definitely be up for making it a 20-24 rounder and throwing down some coin on it.

  12. dan  •  Aug 11, 2009 @2:45 pm

This is really fun! Thanks for putting this together.

I’m not sure about Holliday at #10, especially since we don’t know where he’ll be playing. I would be a lot more cautious about Reyes, though I can understand the gamble given the scarcity of productive SSs. Don’t like taking pitchers in the 1st round. I think Sizemore is a great value at 19, since his injury is fixable and should not have a lasting impact. Is Justin Upton really a top 11 player? Since he doesn;t steal many bases, he’ll need to hit 35 Hrs or so to justify that spot, won’t he? Or maybe I’m just umprepared to draft…

I think Sports Banter’s next pick should be Ellsbury…

  13. danduke  •  Aug 11, 2009 @5:48 pm

I’m down for a money league. Though if we decided to make it a full league instead of a 14 rounder-draft 9 bats 5 arms-deal, that would definitely change my drafting for the later rounds (i.e. I might let an OF spot slide to round 17 or somesuch).

There are some interesting guys left. Excited to see how it ends up.

  14. hamboners  •  Aug 11, 2009 @7:21 pm

i’m down for sure. we should decide now though. anyone opposed? buy-in? roto?

  15. TheSportsBanter  •  Aug 11, 2009 @7:40 pm

Seems like we have a ton of support for this league. Would everyone be ok with these rules:

5×5 as described in the draft rules.

$100 buy-in (would be open to more); no transaction fees

    Non-keeper

22 Active Roster Spots; 2 DL Spots

    Starting Lineups

    C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF (3), Util
    SP (2), RP (1), P (6)

dan- no Ellsbury for me but close.

  16. danduke  •  Aug 11, 2009 @9:14 pm

I don’t have that kind of money, haha

But I would be in for up to $50 probably

  17. JeffZimmerman  •  Aug 11, 2009 @9:25 pm

I am not interested if there is any change from the initial rules because my draft strategy was based on the 9 position players and 5 pitchers. If you want a league with only these 14 players, no bench, and maybe add like 2 DL slots, no problem, I am in, otherwise can’t change the rules mid draft.

  18. danduke  •  Aug 11, 2009 @10:06 pm

I’ve made a Google spreadsheet with the current draft results input. I’ve opened it up for edits, so feel free to change your roster after tomorrow’s update!

  19. Millsy  •  Aug 12, 2009 @5:43 am

I have to agree with Jeff Zimmerman…I don’t want to change the draft in the middle. I would be willing to continue the league as he explains it but changing the rosters around now will severely change things (perhaps even my first 2 picks!!). I think in a 10 man league, it’s reasonable to have no bench spots. There’s so much on the waiver wire, just using that can make a viable league.

Plus…I’d win anyway so I dunno if you guys want to throw away your $50 to $100 bucks………

    ;-)

If everybody really wanted to go longer than 14 rounds, I’d be open to it. But I would need consensus from everybody.
