Don’t Sleep On Neftali Feliz

Fantasy Value, Prospects, Relievers

Every so often, a pitching prospect comes up to the major leagues and turns heads even in a middle relief role. A few years ago, it was Francisco Liriano. Then, Joba Chamberlain. Now, Neftali Feliz.

The Rangers’ fire-thrower has put up astounding stats since appearing for the first time on August 3rd: a 0.46 ERA, a 0.31 WHIP, 26 strikeouts and just 1 walk in less than 20 innings.

Let’s put that in context. Since being called up, according to our calculations, Feliz has been the 11th most valuable pitcher overall in standard 5×5 leagues. In a middle relief role.  He’s been more valuable in that time than players like Tim Lincecum, Josh Johnson, and Javier Vazquez and every reliever in baseball except for Andrew Bailey.

There’s a report out in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that the team hasn’t decided on Feliz’ role for the club next year. Should he be a starter or reliever? We might have the ol’ Joba debate all over again, but regardless of his role, he’s demands serious fantasy buzz.

A friend of mine umped a game Feliz pitched in last year in AA. Said the guy’s stuff was so nasty he had trouble seeing the ball to call Balls and Strikes.
