Get ready to hear a little bit of sleeper buzz concerning Matt Murton.
The Oakland Athletics traded Lou Piniella’s least favorite outfield prospect to the Colorado Rockies for a less-than-special infielder.
Murton has been the subject of a bit of tout throughout his career. Statheads loved his consistent plate discipline (.400+ OBP in the minors) and predicted he could be capable of a 30-HR season. His previous promotions within the Cubs organization and a trade to the A’s last year prompted the fantasy baseball world to put the guy on the sleeper radar. Prospects only get so many chances to impress in the major leagues before they are forgotten, but Potential + Coors Field is a recipe for a renewed hype cycle.
In other baseball news, the Baltimore Orioles signed Ty Wigginton, another popular sleeper. Both Murton’s role in Colorado and Wiggy’s role in Baltimore have yet to be quite determined, leaving a bit of risk for those who would roster either player, plus Carlos Gonzalez, Ryan Spilborghs, Dexter Fowler, Luke Scott, Melvin Mora, and Felix Pie, among others whose playing time could be in jeopardy.
